Relocation blues

I'm still trying to organize my sewing -----between sorting,discarding,resorting and packing,"things" are a little chaotic!
So here's two views of one chaotic MESS that is driving me to distraction.

Punkin Pincushion

Way back January 9th,this lovely bright "punkin" Pincushion arrived in the mail box from Gerry !
I KNOW I emailed Gerry to say that it had arrived after a visit to MaureenB,but in the kerfuffle of checking out the house we had signed a contract on,I forgot to post pictures and acknowledge Gerry's gift. So,here you go..............Thanks Gerry!

The mail got through!

It was so good today to receive an email from Gerry that the postcard I'd mailed to her as part of the Art Meme Swap actually got through!
So much of my international mail seems to go MIA these days,that I feel fortunate that a card I just popped in the local mailbox rather than at the PostOffice got through!

Once a year Day!

Meet Possum, an elderly (about 15 years) overweight,sweet natured puss.
Because Poss has a very thick fur coat,which appears to have outer and inner layers so thick you can never find her skin,she has an annual visit to Mandy of Doggie Hair Dooz to make life more bearable.
I do attempt to help Poss by using a stripping brush,but it's not enough.
These are "after " shots! Mandy leaves the face,tail and paws relatively untouched to preserve Possum's dignity.
With Poss being such a sweet natured puss (luckily) no tranquillisers are used;
There is no hissy fitting,no yowling no display of unsheathed claws...........how good is that!

And when today Mandy declared the cut to be complete,Possum ambled up to Mandy,nudged her on the chest and settled down leaning against her for a purr and a cuddle!

Unfortunately I forgot to take the camera with me,so no shot of that! 

Second Anniversary

Would you believe!
I missed the second anniversary of KenMaursCorner...........January 7, 2005 .

"Life" has been so hectic with the upcoming move:
house-hunting;
soul searching over what to keep and what to discard-----
commencing packing the important things..........fabrics,fibres etc
Escorting Ken to his various medical appointments
and starting to plan how to decorate our new home---------

that January 7 slipped under the radar!

What have I accomplished in two years of blogging?

Firstly: the wonderful people I now have regular contact with! Thank you all for your friendship,help and encouragement.

Secondly: (red face time) I really dont think that my blogging skills have improved as much as I hoped they would.
(I'm definitely leaving the switch over to the newer blog format until after we have relocated,when just maybe I might be able to think more clearly.)

UFOs........more have been added to the pile instead of lessening!
Blame that on dabbling in Journal quilts and fabric postcards,
AND.......joining Fibre Art Traders ,
TextileChallenges
Needle felting and several other similar groups.

Still I did get five journal quilts completed and forwarded for inclusion in the Aus_NZ_Artquilters display that will be part of the AQC in Melbourne next month.

Enough already!

Today we drove down to Woody Point for an in depth look at what will be our new home come February10/12.
(For "in -depth" read "armed with tape measure & notebook" !)

On realizing that the kitchen did include a "you beaut" M/W oven,my comment was :
"My old M/W can go in the laundry......................."

Stunned expressions from current owner and the realtor.............
until I explained that I would be using laundry M/W for dyeing silk ribbons and fabrics in the laundry rather than in the kitchen.!!


MEN!!
Can't think outside the square can they!
Maybe I need tea bags & mugs in the broom cupboard VBG!

when some twelve months ago when she was making embellished shoe bags for her daughter's teacher.

I have been fascinated as much by the research on the various shoe designers that Nellie writes of as I have been by the descriptions of HOW she fashioned them.

It reminds me of my own love affair with shoes when I was young and silly.

Thank you Nellie for stirring up memories of the Winter Balls I enjoyed in Western Australia back in the 1950s.

December 13 revisited

Back in December I shared a pic of the Ring-tailed possum family about to play on our roof:
A short while ago,the birds were carrying on-----yet again!
This time their target was a young possum!

I don't know where Mum and the other young one are......hopefully hiding/snoozing in a nest of foliage.
This little guy is now snuggled into the canopy of the Mango tree, and
hopefully the birds will leave him alone to continue his snooze.

I'm beginning to think of renaming my blog "Hitchcock's Birds"........ 

Lounge lizard

Yesterday the birds were making a great commotion in the backyard ,and being rather busy at the time I didn't check it out. Later,in the afternoon I was out the front,heard a rustling in the plants and saw Jesse chase "something "onto the front porch;I arrived in time to see a stripy tail slide between the glass doors and into the lounge room.........

This 18 inch Monitor lizard was inside and safe from cats/Jesse.

Now,I can tolerate the odd skink or gecko inside,but not a lizard this size,so my husband played the wild life warrior and caught it
Unfortunately when it was released outside ,it moved so quickly
(in some areas they are referred to as Racehorse goannas )
that I did not get a full length photo.........beautiful markings!

Again this morning,the birds were giving their alarm calls: he was back up a gum tree and the butcher birds,magpies and willy wag-tails were harassing him to leave "their" territory. 

A treat from Shay

Some six or seven years ago when I first "met" Shay via a Yahoo CQ group, she gave me a recipe for "spiced Pecans".

A couple of days back I was surprised and delighted to receive a parcel from her containing not only a sampling of her spiced pecans, which had a hint of cloves I think.!

also some "to die for" Christmas cookies , so sweet and short,that I'm amazed they survived international mail handling,and Australian Customs!

and a real treasure: a chicken- scratched apron which belonged to her grandmother (Caroline Taunta Cann) some years back.
The needle woven picots in the central design are superb,and I sincerely thank Shay for giving me such a great gift. 

Today

The upper pic was taken today,between showers.When you compare it with the lower one taken in November...........the grass has greened up,considerably and the two Fiddlewood trees are recovering from their "haircuts" in October.
 

Memories

Bought at auction June 1984 we spent a couple of months refurbishing before moving in.

Christmas may be over..........

BUT..........our family received a gift that lasts the entire year!
Our darling daughter and her husband are tired of the "commercialism of Christmas",
and as no-one in our family really needed any gifts,they sponsored in the family name
the upkeep of a (cat) kennel at the Dakabin RSPCA.
As the sign on the kennel states:

My kennel friends are the Curlewis family
Who chose..........
....... gift of hope to those in need.


The youngest member of the family,10y.o. Kayla received a junior membership in the RSPCA:
it included a cap with RSPCA logo,
stickers,activity book and newsletters throughout the year.
So KJ's gift lasts all year long as well as teaching her "something"

For those of you maybe worried by the cat in the tree............DONT!

Catch up time

Well,after two lovely FAMILY oriented days and absolute extremes of weather........
Christmas Day we sweltered in 35 degree Celcius and enjoyed (cold) prawns (Shrimps to our US cousins) Lobster/saltwater crayfish,salads,cold drinks and cold dessert,
Boxing Day (December 26) saw a climate change to cool weather.
Today in southeast Queensland has virtually qualified as the COLDEST December day in a century.........maximum here at Moodlu was 16 degree C (approx 64 deg Fah) and for a sub tropical area in SUMMER,that is cold!
Between the "cold" and the wet weather I have been able to catch up on a few committments,so now have ready for mailing my last 8 cards for the "Art2Mail group18" fabric Postcard swap and cards for Emmy (cramzy in the Nederlands) and Nellie in the USA.
I still owe Gerry in the USA and Helen in the UK an art meme swap,but at least my conscience isn't pricking so badly, and they WILL get theirs....eventually
Tomorrow we go off (again) to view some houses.............I didn't realise how difficult it was to find a reasonably 'young' low-set house close to the bayside of Moreton Bay on the Peninsula!

I have included pics of some of the postcards going out in tomorrow's mail.............but I'm not saying "which" goes "where"!

Christmas under the Southern Cross

I came across this poem which reflects for those of us in the southern hemisphere what our " white christmas" is really like!


CHRISTMAS UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS
I am tired of snowmen and sleighs while we swelter in summer heat.
I am tired of talk of Jack Frost while we struggle with swollen feet.
No glistening snow in our lane and no snowman called "Parson Brown".
It is sun block and sunhats and "Do we really have to go to town?"
Our meadow is a thirsty paddock and a farmer reaping grain,
The ever-present fear of bushfire and a land that cries out for rain.

No Yule log and no mistletoe,No frosty morning air,
Just endless days of summer,And children without a care.
It's splashing in a swimming pool,And walking on the beach.
It's lovely summer meals and fruits,Cherries, apricots and peach.

It is insect repellent,and Carols in the Park,
Children in pyjamas,waiting for the dark.
It is seafood and salads,Icy cold drinks and ice cream,
It is holiday time and friendship,Such joy these things mean.
It is travelling many outback miles at night to avoid the heat.
It is the joy of catching up,and the friends that we meet.

It is the friendly handshake underneath a sky of blue.
It is the "welcome to my home"
It is the "I have missed you"
Christmas under the Southern Cross in a vast and "Wide Brown Land "is really not very different when we feel the touch of friendship's hand.

So as we celebrate again this year and we delight in the Christmas season.
Let's remember it matters not where we are,
What matters is the reason.!

Today's mail

Today's mail brought cards from Brandi in Mt Vernon,IN amd Merna in Victoria.

Brandi's card is a cool glittery affair of sequins beads and yarn.just what you need with our summer weather.

Merna's card features folded teabags as the back ground and a (hybrid) FME'd flower.
I heard of another Victorian friend using teabags to make flowers but this is the first I've actually seen.
Looks as though I NEED to start drinking tea doesn't it! 

Secret treasures

Some months back,QA magazines did a feature on "secret treasures"
citing a Balinese influence for the four petalled shape.
I had this carved agate leaf which I felt lent itself to being a Secret Treasure.
I attempted to create a treasure within treasures!

The outer layers of both 'boxes" are an upholstery fabric;A tone on tone cream leaf pattern echoing the shape of the agate leaf.

The smaller "box" is lined with reddish orange dyed silk;
the larger container lining is a cotton quilting fabric.
Both containers were embellished with chunky antique gold FME.

Sacrilege!

Can you imagine.........a very dear friend gives you a gorgeous brocade fabric and says
"I thought you could cut it up and use it in your CQ"
The "it" in question she acquired when living in Japan a couple of years back;
"It" is a sample of Obi fabric from a sample book,much like we Occidentals are used to seeing upholstery samples.

When you look at the reverse side of the brocade,and see the count of silk threads used to weave the pattern on the front,you are" blown away" by the intricacy of the weave.

No way will I ever be "cutting it up".
The fabric is 12 inches wide...........when I think of the Haiku that refers to
"A folded fan of autumn is inserted
In the obi hard like a board"
It makes me wonder,just how uncomfortable a twelve inch sash around the waist would be!

I still dream the improbable dream,that "one day" I might get to visit Hokkaido and northen parts of Japan and experience for myself a culture that has long fascinated me.
